Lyric Love

23 Oct

This weeks Lyric Love belongs to Stevie Wonder. Great music has one thing in common, it crosses all boundaries. Stevie Wonder is one of the most talented musicians that has ever lived and has blessed us for years with song after song that can’t be compared to his last. As a serious Stevie Wonder  fan I thought I had heard every one of his songs until my late aunt Myra played the song “Visions” while sitting in her living room. I was immediately attracted to the songs harp and the story he told about an untouchable place, this song is quintessential Stevie Wonder. Today makes a year since my aunt died and it never fails that I feel her spirit whenever this song is played. Shortly after she died I received a hand written letter from her and the only thing making the words on that piece of paper palatable was this song. Read on…

“Visions”

People hand in hand
Have I lived to see the milk and honey land ?
Where hate’s a dream and love forever stands
Or is this a vision in my mind ?

The law was never passed
But somehow all men feel they’re truly free at last
Have we really gone this far through space and time
Or is this a vision in my mind ?

I’m not one who makes believe
I know that leaves are green
They only change to brown when autumn comes around
I know just what I say
Today’s not yesterday
And all things have an ending

But what I’d like to know
Is could a place like this exist so beautiful
Or do we have to find our wings and fly away
To the vision in our mind ?

I’m not one who makes believes
I know that leaves are green
They only change to brown when autumn comes around

I know just what I say
Today’s not yesterday
And all things have an ending

But what I’d like to know
Is could a place like this exist so beautiful
Or do we have to take our wings and fly away
To the vision in our minds ?

Lyric Love

There is never a time that the lady Jill Scott does not have lyrics to express any emotion that I am feeling. Philadelphia born singer Jill Scott has words for my love, lust and even my anger. I have loved Jill Scotts music since her very first album but “The Real Thing Words and Sounds Volume. 3” did a beautiful job of expressing Jill’s feeling of hurt and heartache after ending a longterm relationship. Purely coincidence that I was also ending a serious relationship at the time of the albums release date, I felt as though she had written these lyrics for me. “My Love” is perfectly written. Enjoy!

“My Love”

By: Jill Scott

[Intro:]
Yo, I’m tripping right,
I heard you got married.
You got married?
No I mean, make any
It don’t really make any sense
I mean, it’s not like I, I didn’t think you were seeing other people or whatever,
I mean I was seeing other people but
You know what this is,
You know what it was, you tsch
I can’t say I really understand though

You chose her cause she’s sweet as pie
Take what you give, even your lies
But baby, are happy without me?
She scrubs your back, washes your clothes
Gives you everything that ask for
But don’t you ever want more?
’cause my love

[Chorus:]
My love is deeper
Tighter
Sweeter
Higher
Flyer
Didn’t you know this,
Or didn’t you notice?
(My love, my love)
My love is deeper
Tighter
Sweeter
Higher
Flyer
Didn’t you know this,
Or didn’t you notice?

Mmmm, what we had don’t need no words
Deeper than anything you ever heard
I ain’t reaching baby,
I know I should be your lady
You say you’re happy
You say you’re great
But you know and I know you really ain’t
You need to come be with me
That’s the way it’s supposed to be

[Chorus]

Cause oh,
All I ever do is think about you baby
I hold you in my arms inside my dreams
And I know what I know and what I know is
That no matter where you go
You will always think of me

[Chorus]

This weeks Lyric Love belongs to Little Dragon. Originating from Gothenburg Sweden. Little Dragon is one of my favorite groups. A mix of r&b, electronic, synthpop and soul Little Dragon gives me the same nostalgic feeling I get when listening to greats like Aretha Franklin and The Clash. The lead singer Yukimi Nagano has a voice that would make you question her tiny frame, sometimes sounding as if she were a baptist singer in a church choir from the 1950’s. I didn’t know the Swedish had so much soul. Read along and enjoy!

“Constant Surprises”

By: Little Dragon

I was walking home
Looking at the trees
Got the feeling that they
Were looking back at me

Thoughts that occurred to me
Where not of the usual kind
And I don’t take it granted no
I don’t call them mine
I don’t call them mine
‘Cause in my life things
Are built on

Constant surprises
Coming my way
Some call it coincidence
But I like to call it fate

Constant surprises
Coming my way
Some call it coincidence
But I like to call it fate

The higher forces want to connect
Last night in my dream I was talking to you
You know who you are
Were you dreaming too
‘Cause in my life
Things are built on
Are built on

Constant surprises
Coming my way
Some call it coincidence
But I like to call it fate

Then on my way home I met this guy
He was not so shy
You know not that kind
We spoke then suddenly I could read his mind
You think it’s mad
But I don’t fool myself
You think its odd
‘Cause in my life
In my life things are built on
They built on
They built on

Constant surprises
Coming my way
Some call it coincidence
But I like to call it fate

Constant surprises
Coming my way
Some call it coincidence
But I like to call it fate

The song is just to good not to include a video. Enjoy!

Dream Cadence

18 Jun

A keep a quiet tongue about this because it seems like everyone in Atlanta is a “stylist” but I styled my first photo shoot here a few months ago. Two friends of mine have a company called DREAM CADENCE  so I was asked to pull some looks together for the shoot. I decided to go for a retro vibe using gingham in both looks for consistency. I used clothes and accessories from my own closet along with a friends. I also used new and vintage pieces. I love how the pictures turned out. These are a few of the proofs but they still look amazing thanks to the photographer Chris Marley

Who Wears the Pants?

10 Jun

Kelly Rowland does! I will do my best not to comment on Ms. Rowlands ever-changing lace front wig but I do adore her outfit. Seen here in London with khaki colored cargo pants, bangles, statement necklace and shoes that would make Carrie Bradshaw weep, she looks perfectly put together. I wear cargo pants at least once a week so I may be biased  but Cargos should be a staple in your summer closet, long or cropped. Kelly pulled this look off well by paring a masculine pant with a feminine and sexy shoe. Adooooores it!

I know I said “Black Girl Pain” by Talib Kweli is one of favorite songs but “The Light” by Common truly is one of my favorite songs of all times. Any true hip hop head loves this song and can rap the lyrics word for word. I had the opportunity to see Common live in California years ago, and he is an amazing lyricist. I would buy a ticket to his show 20 times over! Read On!“The Light”
By: Common

Yeah..

I never knew a luh, luh-luh, a love like this

Gotta be somethin for me to write this
Queen, I ain’t seen you in a minute
Wrote this letter, and finally decide to send it
Signed sealed delivered for us to grow together
Love has no limit, let’s spend it slow forever
I know your heart is weathered by what studs did to you
I ain’t gon’ assault em cause I probably did it too
Because of you, feelings I handle with care
Some niggaz recognize the light but they can’t handle the glare
You know I ain’t the type to walk around with matchin shirts
If relationship is effort I will match your work
I wanna be the one to make you happiest, it hurts you the most
They say the end is near, it’s important that we close..
.. to the most, high
Regardless of what happen on him let’s rely

There are times.. when you’ll need someone..
I will be by your side..
There is a light, that shines,
special for you, and me..

Yo, yo, check it
It’s important, we communicate
and tune the fate of this union, to the right pitch
I never call you my bitch or even my boo
There’s so much in a name and so much more in you
Few understand the union of woman and man
And sex and a tingle is where they assume that it land
But that’s fly by night for you and the sky I write
For in these cold Chi night’s moon, you my light
If heaven had a height, you would be that tall
Ghetto to coffee shop, through you I see that all
Let’s stick to understandin and we won’t fall
For better or worse times, I hope to me you call
So I pray everyday more than anything
friends will stay as we begin to lay
this foundation for a family – love ain’t simple
Why can’t it be anything worth having you work at annually
Granted we known each other for some time
It don’t take a whole day to recognize sunshine

There are times.. when you’ll need someone..
I will be by your side, oh darling
There is a light, that shines,
special for you, and me..

Yeah.. yo, yo, check it
It’s kinda fresh you listen to more than hip-hop
and I can catch you in the mix from beauty to thrift shop
Plus you ship hop when it’s time to, thinkin you fresh
Suggestin beats I should rhyme to
At times when I’m lost I try to find you
You know to give me space when it’s time to
My heart’s dictionary defines you, it’s love and happiness
Truthfully it’s hard tryin to practice abstinence
The time we committed love it was real good
Had to be for me to arrive and it still feel good
I know the sex ain’t gon’ keep you, but as my equal
it’s how I must treat you
As my reflection in light I’ma lead you
And whatever’s right, I’ma feed you
Digga-da, digga-da, digga-da, digga-digga-da-da
Yo I tell you the rest when I see you, peace

There are times.. when you’ll need someone..
I will be by your side..
There is a light, that shines,
special for you, and me..

(I’ll) take my chances.. before they pass..
.. pass me by, oh darling..
You need to look at the other side..
You’ll agree…

Lyric Love

25 May

This past friday I had the pleasure of seeing The Foreign Exchange live at Masquerade here in Atlanta, GA. They have been a favorite of mine for a while so seeing them live was a treat. One of my favorite songs by them is “Take Off Your Blues.” Read on…
Lyrics to Take Off The Blues :

By The Foreign Exchange
(feat. Darien Brockington)

[Phonte:]
(Mmmmmmm, haaah-hahh-hahhh…)
You might, you might, you might, you might as well…
(Mmmmmmm, haaah-hahh-hahhh, haaah-haah…)

After all is said and done you’re next to me
And when the sun goes down, you’re feeling things you’ve never felt before
Nothing left to say to ease your fears
But I know just what to do
Let me take good care of yooo-oohhh-ooou

[Chorus:]
Kick off your shoes
Take off the blues and come to me
So much to do, so much is new for you to see
You might as well-lll, come a little closer
Girl, don’t make me wait too long for you

After all is said and done (said and done)
And there’s nothing left to share (left to share)
It’s the morning after, I watch you laying there (just wanna watch you lying there)
Always told that you should not give in to love (LOVE)
But saying no is so hard to do (so harrrd…)
‘Cause when the feeling’s right, you might as well, yeah

[Chorus]

[Bridge:]
Just, want your attention
Ex-cuse my intentions
Keep your feelings intact – Don’t wanna hurt nobody, let me say it again
There’s, no need to mention
For, this I’ve been wishing
There’s no turning back
Lady, please take my hand

Let’s dance…

[Stan Graham plays a trumpet solo]

[Chorus x2]
