Lyric Love

23 Oct

This weeks Lyric Love belongs to Stevie Wonder. Great music has one thing in common, it crosses all boundaries. Stevie Wonder is one of the most talented musicians that has ever lived and has blessed us for years with song after song that can’t be compared to his last. As a serious Stevie Wonder  fan I thought I had heard every one of his songs until my late aunt Myra played the song “Visions” while sitting in her living room. I was immediately attracted to the songs harp and the story he told about an untouchable place, this song is quintessential Stevie Wonder. Today makes a year since my aunt died and it never fails that I feel her spirit whenever this song is played. Shortly after she died I received a hand written letter from her and the only thing making the words on that piece of paper palatable was this song. Read on…

“Visions”

People hand in hand
Have I lived to see the milk and honey land ?
Where hate’s a dream and love forever stands
Or is this a vision in my mind ?

The law was never passed
But somehow all men feel they’re truly free at last
Have we really gone this far through space and time
Or is this a vision in my mind ?

I’m not one who makes believe
I know that leaves are green
They only change to brown when autumn comes around
I know just what I say
Today’s not yesterday
And all things have an ending

But what I’d like to know
Is could a place like this exist so beautiful
Or do we have to find our wings and fly away
To the vision in our mind ?

I’m not one who makes believes
I know that leaves are green
They only change to brown when autumn comes around

I know just what I say
Today’s not yesterday
And all things have an ending

But what I’d like to know
Is could a place like this exist so beautiful
Or do we have to take our wings and fly away
To the vision in our minds ?

Who Wears The Pants?

21 Oct

Jada Pinkett Smith does! Jada and her family have been spending much time in the big apple promoting the youngest Smith’s new single, “Whip My Hair”. It is clear where Willow Smith gets her bold taste, her mother has impeccable style. Seen walking the streets of New York with head to ankle Chloe and Christian Louboutin pumps she looked perfectly perfect in a stylish fall look. After months of super skinny jeans and leggings (I refuse to use the term jegging) wide leg pants have come back in a big way. The tweed pants Jada was wearing were extremely flattering on her small frame and made her stand 10 feet tall. If you are petite a wide leg trouser will instantly make you appear taller and slimmer.

Leopard print is back, again! Leopard comes around at least once a year and stays with us just in time for the winter months. Designers from Balmain to Hermes have repeatedly used leopard print in their collections but still have the ability to keep the trend current and up to date according to the season. Like with any bold print wear sparingly, and never from head to toe. A tasteful leopard print dress can be sexy when paired with a bright shoe to punctuate the outfit. You can also try a leopard print shoe for a wow effect. It’s rare that prints are considered a classic but leopard is classy and necessary in a true fashionistas wardrobe.

What Lies Beneath?

What Lies Beneath?

Unmentionables, undergarments, underpants, briefs or bloomers, whatever you may call them wearing proper underwear is more important than the outfit itself. Your bra and panties is the first thing you put on so these items should have a proper fit, setting the tone for that days ensemble. Ill fitting underwear is the most hurtful thing you can do to a beautiful dress and a disturbing panty line can cause the most expensive pair of pants to look cheap. Before you can put on your favorite pair of skinny jeans or the Marc Jacob dress you saved up for, you must decide if a thong or boy shorts will be more appropriate. Something short and sweet calls for nude underwear for the split second you uncross your legs and want to prevent the world from seeing anything stripped and unsuitable. Wearing very tight jeans without pockets will look best with a thong, making the pants have a seamless appearance.

An exceptional outfit should be approached in the same way that you approach a recipe in a cookbook, follow the directions and you cannot go wrong. A racer back tank calls for just that, a racer back bra. Unless you are trying to achieve a “Carrie Bradshaw” lingerie moment only the women who sold it to you and the person you decided to bring home that night should know what style and color your undergarments are. Think of your underwear in the same fashion you would with what you are wearing for the day. Is it appropriate? Does it fit well? Does it compliment your wardrobe? If you can answer yes to all the above questions then what lies beneath will be just as stylish as what is above.

Shoe Shine

25 May

If there is only one thing you invest in, in terms of your wardrobe let it be a great pair of heels. A great shoe is always necessary. You can be caught in a disaster of an outfit but from the ankle down you should always do your best to make a lasting impression. When investing in a gorgeous pair of heels label and price should make no never mind, but quality and style should be the most important factors. Whether buying vintage or new you should invest in shoes that are classic and timeless. Spending a lot of money on a pair of shoes that only follows a short-term trend is never worth the money. It is much more cost effective to buy shoes that can be worn with many outfits, making the shoe you select more like an investment than a burden. Although style is almost always the main factor for women when picking out a pair of heels never forget that you have to walk in them so comfort should always be considered. There is nothing worse than a poor walk in a stunning pair of heels. Shoes must carry you through out your day, so you must be able to walk effortlessly in the pair you choose.

“I don’t know who invented the high heel, but all men owe him a lot.”  ~Marilyn Monroe

Lyric Love

20 May

“Black Girl Pain” by Talib Kweli is one of my favorite songs. I think it is rare for people to really listen to and understand the lyrics that are coming through their speakers, so sometimes you just have to read them….

“Black Girl Pain”
(feat. Jean Grae)

[Talib Kweli]
I do it for the people, I do it for the love
I do it for the poet, I do it for the thug
This is for victory, and this is for the slaughter
I do it for my mother, I do it for my daughter
Promise I’ll always love ya, I love to kiss and hug ya
You and your brother should be lookin out for one another
I’m so blessed, man, y’all the reason I got up
Somebody put his hands on you I’m gettin locked up
I’m not playin, that’s the prayer I’m sayin for Diani
And if I die then she’ll be protected by Amani
That’s her bigger brother and I love the way he love her
She a girly-girl, she love to imitate her mother
But she a Gemini, so stay on her friendly side
She’ll put that look on you, it’s like somebody’ friend just died
My pretty black princess smell sweet like that incense
That you buy at the bookstore supporting black business
Teach her what black is; the fact is her parents are thorough
She four reading Cornrows by Camille Yarborough
I keep her hair braided, bought her a black Barbie
I keep her mind free; she ain’t no black zombie
This is for Aisha, this is for Kashera
This is for Khadijah scared to look up in the mirror
I see the picture clearer thru the stain on the frame
She got a black girl name, she livin black girl pain
This is for Makeba, and for my mamacita
What’s really good, ma? I’ll be your promise-keeper
I see the picture clearer thru the stain on the frame
She got a black girl name, she livin black girl pain

[Hook]
My mama said life would be so hard
Growin up days as a black girl scarred
In so many ways though we’ve come so far
They just know the name they don’t know the pain
So please hold your heads up high
Don’t be ashamed of yourself know I
Will carry it forth til the day I die
They just know the name they don’t know the pain black girl

[Jean Grae]
This is for Beatrice Bertha Benjamin who gave birth to
Tsidi Azeeda for Lavender Hill for Kyalisha
ALTHLONE, Mitchells Plain, Swazi girls I’m reppin for thee
Mannesburg, Guguletu where you’d just be blessed to get thru
For beauty shinin thru like the sun at the highest noon
From the top of the cable car at Table Mountain; I am you
Girls with the skyest blue of eyes and the darkest skin
For Cape Colored allied for realizing we’re African
For all my cousins back home, the strength of mommy’s backbone
The length of which she went for raising, sacrificing her own
The pain of not reflecting the range of our complexions
For rubber pellet scars on Auntie Elna’s back I march
Fist raised caramel shinin in all our glory
For Mauritius, St, Helena; my blood is a million stories
Winnie for Joan and for Edie, for Norma, Leslie, Ndidi
For Auntie Betty, for Melanie; all the same family
Fiona, Jo Burg, complex of mixed girls
For surviving thru every lie they put into us now
The world is yours and I swear I will stand focused
Black girls, raise up your hands; the world should clap for us
